The Washington Monument stands as the tallest structure in Washington, D.C. Shaped like an Egyptian obelisk, it is 555’ 5/8” high and made of marble, granite, and bluestone gneiss, it took 36 years to complete.
The Washington Monument stands to honor George Washington as a founding father of the United States, as the first president, a colonial commander, and someone that established democratic institutions in the U.S. on the east face, facing the rising sun, the Latin words "Laus Deo," which translate to, "Praise be to God."
